At the age of twelve, Guts ran away from Donovan and became a mercenary. He quickly proved himself to be a skilled warrior, and rose through the ranks of the mercenary band he joined. Eventually, Guts became the leader of his own mercenary group.

During the course of the series, Guts goes through many trials and tribulations. He faces off against demonic and supernatural foes, as well as humans who wish to do him harm. Despite all of the hardships he faces, Guts never gives up. He continues to fight, even when all hope seems lost.
